AVD is a Lie

Why average view duration is useful but dangerous when it becomes your only definition of a good video.

Updated 2026-05-29

The trap

Average view duration can make a short, narrow video look healthier than a broader video that creates more total watch time, subscribers, or revenue.

What to compare instead

  • AVD next to video length
  • AVD next to total watch time
  • AVD next to click-through rate
  • AVD next to the business goal of the video

Practical rule

Treat AVD as a quality signal, not a final score. Ask whether the video held attention well enough for its promise and whether the total outcome justified the format.

Better questions

  • Did the video create more total watch time than similar uploads?
  • Did it earn the right click from the right viewer?
  • Did the viewer reach the part of the video where the value or CTA appears?
  • Did the format create subscribers, revenue, or another strategic outcome?
