AVD is a Lie
Why average view duration is useful but dangerous when it becomes your only definition of a good video.

The trap
Average view duration can make a short, narrow video look healthier than a broader video that creates more total watch time, subscribers, or revenue.
What to compare instead
- AVD next to video length
- AVD next to total watch time
- AVD next to click-through rate
- AVD next to the business goal of the video
Practical rule
Treat AVD as a quality signal, not a final score. Ask whether the video held attention well enough for its promise and whether the total outcome justified the format.
Better questions
- Did the video create more total watch time than similar uploads?
- Did it earn the right click from the right viewer?
- Did the viewer reach the part of the video where the value or CTA appears?
- Did the format create subscribers, revenue, or another strategic outcome?
